This One’s Just Right!

Complexity in Big History by Fred Spier, University of Amsterdam

Without finding new energy to emerge from, the complexity of human history could fail to adapt with time. Our Earth is reaching the point where it is no longer “just right” similar to Goldilocks finding her perfect porridge.

I had never considered how or why organisms on our planet have been changing throughout history other than the simple explanation of “natural selection” for evolution. While historically our microorganisms waited for the perfect circumstances to be granted naturally through time, these changes to our energy resources are now dependent on our own actions and behaviors.

I find Spier’s ideas of energy density to be a great solution to explaining how it has been happening throughout our Big History, as well as a reminder to us that we are, in part, responsible for our own demise or salvation.
